Written and directed by Khan, his first feature film is set in post-9/11 war-torn Kabul. The film will hold its world premiere at the red-carpet presentation for ‘Artistic And Daring Cinema From Around The World’. The Toronto selectors have described it as “An important breakthrough for Indian cinema”. The film is directed by well-known documentary filmmaker Kabir Khan and stars John Abraham and Arshad Warsi. The good news is that ‘Kabul Express’, produced by Aditya Chopra, has been selected in the Special Presentations Programme at the 31st Toronto International Film Festival being held from September 7-16 this year. The TIFF holds high value for the North American market and the festival will run from September 7 to September 16, 2006.It could easily be called a one of its kind film coming from the studio of Yashraj Films, especially because the banner has come to be associated with a certain brand of cinema. Last year Deepa Mehta’s Water was screened at the opening of the TIFF and hence received a great response. The other films include Chitra Palekar’s Maati Maay (A Grave keeper’s Tale), Rajnesh Domalpalli’s Vanaja and Paban Kumar’s documentary A Cry In The Dark. There will be three other Indian films that will be screened at the 31st Toronto International Film Festival. The film being a realistic film is devoid of any songs. Kabir Khan claims that the script of the film basically involves his experiences in Kabul which he has recorded over the past years. Director Kabir is a noted documentary filmmaker and has shot several docu-dramas in Afghanistan. Kabul Express is basically a thriller and an anti-war film which deals with a car drive and a highly volatile situation in Afghanistan. The film basically deals with two days in the lives of five different people who come from different cultural backgrounds and how they deal with a situation in the war torn Afghanistan. Director Kabir was earlier shooting for a documentary film in Kabul when the idea for making Kabul Express was developed. Arshad and John play two television journalists who go to Kabul to meet the Taliban terrorist outfit post the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks. Kabul Express has been shot in Kabul in Afghanistan under extremely tight security. The film will be a part of the Special Presentation Program and will be screened under the category of ‘Artistic and Daring Cinema from around the world’. After Karan Johar’s film Kabhie Alvida Na Kehna was selected for a screening at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), its now the turn of Yash Raj production Kabul Express which is slated to make its presence felt at the TIFF.
